Taiwan is now facing the aging population and low birth rate problems, so foreign
workers which come to Taiwan to be caretakers, factory workers, and fishers are
rapidly on the increase. Statistics from some government units show that the number
of foreign workers from Indonesia grows fastest in Taiwan, nearly 39.60% among all
foreign workers. In addition, the increasing foreign workers also have caused some
social problems such as escape, repatriation, and crime. These situations especially
happened in densely populated urban areas. Therefore, this study adopted
questionnaire survey and focused on Indonesian workers in Taipei area to realize what
current leisure activities they participated in. 103 questionnaires were effectively
returned. Data related to this study were analyzed by using the methods of Descriptive
statistics, Reliability analysis, Independent sample t-test, One-way ANOVA, and
Scheffe’s test.
The findings of this study were as follows: (1) the ages of Indonesian workers in
metropolitan areas mostly ranged from 25 to 30, in which, most workers have been
married and have lived in Taiwan for 1-2 years. They mostly spend NT$1,001-3,000
per month on their leisure consumption. (2) Their top 5 frequency of leisure
participation are 1) listening to music and broadcasts, 2) meditation and taking a rest,
3) chatting with friends on the telephone, 4) watching TV and movies, and 5) reading
newspaper and magazines. (3) Based on different gender, occupation, marital status,
and monthly leisure consumption, there were significant differences over the leisure
participation of Indonesian workers in metropolitan areas. The above conclusions
revealed that, for these Indonesian workers in metropolitan areas, the items with
highest frequency of leisure participation are connected to those facilities available in
their workplaces. Therefore, we suggested that the leisure participation of foreign
workers in metropolitan areas has something to do with their work environment.
Hopefully this finding can prove useful for future research and for government
organizations in planning leisure activities for foreign workers and in establishing
foreign worker policies.
